About US Living Report

US Living Report provides comprehensive data for every state and county in the United States. We aggregate data from multiple authoritative sources to give you a complete picture of demographics, economy, housing, safety, education, and quality of life.

Data Sources

  • US Census Bureau - American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates for demographics, income, housing, and commute data
  • FBI Crime Data Explorer - Crime statistics from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)
  • Urban Institute Education Data API - School enrollment and education statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
  • Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) - Regional Price Parities (RPP) for cost of living comparisons
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) - Employment and unemployment data from the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program

Scoring Methodology

Our composite score is a weighted combination of multiple dimensions:

  • Income (25%) - Median household income and per capita income
  • Employment (15%) - Unemployment rate (lower is better)
  • Safety (15%) - Violent and property crime rates (lower is better)
  • Housing Affordability (15%) - Home value to income ratio and rent to income ratio
  • Education (10%) - Student-teacher ratio and enrollment data
  • Cost of Living (10%) - Regional Price Parities (lower cost is better)
  • Quality of Life (10%) - Commute time and work-from-home rates

Each metric is normalized to a 0-100 scale using percentile ranking within the same geographic level (state or county). The composite score is the weighted average of all available dimension scores.
